Design of Product-Service System for Telkom Polytechnic IT System

Abstract

Information technology strategies are more and more challenged to bring production with complex
demands, which requires a substantial shift from production of goods to the provision of knowledge
intensive systemic solutions. Solutions usually consist in a system of products and services at Telkom
Polytechnic. Service cannot be held, and typically intangible, perishable, difficult to port, and hard to
measure. Given their strategic business process relevance, such solutions have rightly been widely
discussed in management and marketing disciplines, but in the design discipline, the methodological
implications of Product-Service System (PSS) have rarely been discussed even though design components
play a critical role in the development of Information Technology. This paper aims at exploring the
disciplinary domains that may offer methodological suggestions for the design of PSS. The paper focuses
on the design of PSS from a designer’s perspective and emphasizing the role of designers in developing
innovative PSS. The other part outlines methodological tools that can be used when dealing with specific
aspects of the design activity focused on Information Technology for Telkom Polytechnic using PSS. This
paper also introduces a new thinking of design and deployment of competent and competitive service
systems by taking account of these service’s unique characteristics. It aims to help promote and advance
Service System that ultimately will empower IT service systems and make them highly adaptable
and sustainable to the global, changing, and dynamic service environment to meet the severe competition
challenges.
