Librarian Insights on AI Adoption in Indonesian Libraries

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a significant influence on societal and professional domains in the 21st century. This paper examines the adoption of AI within library sciences, with particular emphasis on the Indonesian context. It explores the challenges associated with incorporating AI tools in Indonesian libraries, addressing cultural, ethical, and operational dimensions.

Using a quantitative research methodology, the study surveyed 101 library professionals across Indonesia, representing diverse educational and organizational backgrounds. Data were gathered through a structured survey designed to provide measurable insights into the adoption and effects of AI in library settings. Stratified random sampling was employed to ensure a representative distribution of participants within the library science field.

The findings reveal critical trends and observations. The Indonesian librarian community is characterized by demographic diversity, with most participants holding bachelor’s degrees and working within educational and governmental organizations. There is widespread awareness of AI and its potential to improve library services. However, participants generally exhibit foundational rather than advanced knowledge of AI, particularly in specialized areas such as machine learning and data management.

The study identifies key factors that affect the adoption of AI in libraries, including user privacy concerns, human resource readiness, and managerial support. While there is consensus on the significance of these factors, perspectives differ regarding user acceptance and management priorities. The use of AI tools in Indonesian libraries is varied, with applications such as chat-bots and automated metadata generation being notably prevalent. Ethical concerns, including bias, privacy, and transparency, are prominent, and participants express differing views on AI’s implications for job roles and responsibilities.
