LIGHTING AND VISUALIZATION TO ENHANCE THE SPIRITUALITY OF ELDERLY CONGREGATIONS IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF WORSHIP SPACES

Abstract : This research addresses the gap in understanding of how interior lighting and visuals of worship spaces relate to support the spiritual experience of the elderly with the aim of examining the strategic contribution of lighting and visualization elements in the interior design of worship spaces. The focus is on how these visual elements shape a spirit of place (genius loci) that is inclusive of an aging population experiencing declining physical and cognitive function. Therefore, creating a meaningful spiritual space is important for the elderly. To address these issues, this study used mixed methods; quantitative through the SF-12 questionnaire to determine aspects related to personal well-being, and qualitative methods through interviews with elderly congregants to explore their preferences and experiences. Quantitative analysis showed significant correlations between the use of specific lighting and visual design strategies and spiritual dimensions. Furthermore, the qualitative data results provided additional insights that visual comfort, focus of worship, as well as the selection of seating positions are closely related to the creation of a sacred atmosphere that supports spiritual connection. In conclusion, considering the principles of genius loci can create a contextualized space that suits the needs of elderly congregants. The findings result in recommendations for interior design of worship spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also contextual and transcendental, according to the spiritual needs of the elderly. This research provides a conceptual contribution in the development of designs that are inclusive and responsive to the dynamics of the spiritual experience of the elderly in the context of interior design.
